Excerpt from my Blog about Blogging for Small Businesses
No, not the loveable character from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. My master blaster is the top page of a cross-domain linking directory. Many go in. Many go out. Actually, the directories are the result of years of careful work where each site I work for has a directory full of pages that are, essentially, one page reviews of the site they're linking to. But because the little reviews are in the links directory of one of my clients' sites, they work as content for the hosting site, while bestowing linking power to the target site. the only page linking to each of the review pages is the links index of that host site.

I focus on the major search engines: Google, Yahoo, and MSN. The three of them account for over 75% of all internet searches. For more information about that statistic, visit this page at Search Engine Watch, Danny Sullivan's site that is the most valuable resource to anyone who wants to learn more about internet search engines.
Other valuable resources for learning about search engines can be found at the search engines themselves. For instance, Google has a very detailed section about all of their features here.
I also check in occasionally on the search engine news at Search Engine Showdown, although it seems Greg hasn't been posting for a while... And, there are a slew of helpful tools at Self SEO.
When researching which keywords to use, I use Word Tracker, a British company that compiles data on a wide variety of search engines and directories. This data is extremely valuable because it shows me not only they words people are actually searching for, but how much competition there is for each of those words, allowing for calculations about the most valuable words that balance heavy traffic with little competition. I also use a free service that's similar, NicheBot.
For submissions, and even more keyword research, as well as for mailing list maintenance, and other helpful things for small businesses, I use Microsoft's BCentral.com. I'm not a big fan of the behemoth, but they bought up two services I always used in the old days, link exchange and submit-it. So, I just stayed there. It's a good service, and there are ways from within that service to really help clients on MSN search. One of the nice services is the business card, where they give you a page in their directory. Read more about that here.
For the most part, though, what I know about the search engines, and how to get higher ranks on them, I learned myself. I've developed a lot of valuable "real estate" on the web, and I can move clients into my neighborhoods by linking to them from my real estate. So, contact me for more information today, and we'll get some business going for you through your web site.
