The "City"
of Hollywood (really just part of the City of Los Angeles) has tried to clean up its act in the last few
years. The subway is here, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences is building its new Academy Awards Theater at
Hollywood and Vine. Disney has moved in, much like in Times
Square. And Hollywood is less Hollyweird than it used to be.
Maybe it just seems less weird now. Most of these pictures were taken circa
2001, while they were still constructing Hollywood and Highland.
My Dad, Frank Supak, was head
soundman at the Hollywood Bowl
for over 20 years, so I've seen Hollywood change a lot over my life. This
photography essay of Hollywood is dedicated to him. I always told him I
was going to do it. I just wish he'd have seen it.
But there's still a lot of grime and grunge,
and I don't just mean inside the movie studios and record
companies. Hollywood is home to many more broken dreams than
realized ones, and broken dreams leave a lot of grime behind
when they splatter all over the star-lined streets.
